FIASCO. Videoart evenings

11-13 July 2024

Grădina cu filme – Cinema & More
Strada Tache D. Ionescu 29, 010353 București, România

Co-curators Larisa Crunțeanu and Cristina Stoenescu
Open-air screening programme with an international selection of 23 video works and two thematic public talks

The title of the event is inspired by Stanisław Lem’s eponymous science fiction novel, in which an encounter with another alien life form leads to catastrophe due to failure in communication. The selection of films represents an associative conversation with some of Lem’s hypotheses, proposing works that nuance, challenge and at times ironize the pessimistic narrative of the book.

Three themes emerge from the reading of Lem’s novel, guiding the selection of films: Marginal Gaze (July 11), Self as Archive (July 12), Histories Swarm (July 13). On the first two evenings, July 11 and 12, curators Edith Lázár and Anja Lückenkemper will each give a thematic talk, followed by screenings featuring video artworks* by: Daniel Frota de Abreu, Anetta Mona Chisa, Fredj Moussa, Marco Verhoogt, Mara Verhoogt and Ioana Mincu, Alice dos Ries, András Cséfalvay, OJOBOCA, Marie Lukáčová, Ann Oren, Thea Lazăr, Mary Reid Kelley & Patrick Kelley, Jakub Štourač & Anna Luňáková, Helen Ana Flanagan, Naomi Rincón-Gallardo, Lori Lako, Dragoș Alexandrescu, Olivia Mihălțianu, Christian Jankowski, Irina Botea Bucan, Zhanna Kadyrova, Guerreiro Do Divino Amor, Agnieszka Polska.

*The films are shown and subtitled in English.
